SMART Recovery was recently mentioned in a Dear Abby column! Dear Abby has a worldwide readership of more than 110 million followers who come to her for sound, compassionate advice, delivered with the straightforward style of a good friend.
In letter 2 of 2 on August 24, a 28-year old with a serious drinking problem writes to Abby seeking advice for a secular recovery solution. Abby responds with two non-religious recommendations, one of them being SMART Recovery.
Abby says, ” … I’m glad to offer secular alternatives. The first is SMART Recovery, a four-point program that encourages motivation to abstain and provides help in coping with cravings, managing negative emotions and finding a healthy life balance.
SMART Recovery offers face-to-face support groups worldwide as well as online meetings … lifetime attendance at meetings is not required. To find more information, visit smartrecovery.org.“

Im a recovering drug addict that is looking for a sponsor I know one will come my way eventually but right now im finding out that to be honest is lots easier to be in alot of situations if it wasent immediate family I was speaking with but I also know that I am powerless over the situation and then I do need somebody to talk to I’ve made all the proper appointment for counseling for drug dependency but I just recently got out of incarceration for 6 months I’ve been out three weeks and I’ve had a lot of close calls and I couldn’t get it stayed sober without talking to somebody but that had to be my husband that I am separated from and my daughter which both hold a lot of resentment against me and as they say we can’t do things that we haven’t been taught so I’m just trying to find a better way
In SMART Recovery, we do not use the guidance of a sponsor, or commit to any requirements other than the goals of recovery that you set for yourself. We encourage you to find a SMART Recovery meeting to see if SMART Recovery can provide the support you are looking for.
