Addictive Behaviors: Cigarettes, alcohol, marijuana and other drugs, compulsive behaviors (i.e., anger, bad attitude, escapism, depressed thinking.)
Sober and Clean since 1999.
The first time I heard of SMART Recovery I was curious about its emphasis on rational thinking. I already had more than a decade sober and clean from a combination of other programs when I came to SMART Recovery online. Yet even with all that sober time, I didn’t feel like my recovery was quite what I had hoped it would be. I wanted more meaning, more content, and more depth than other programs offered. I wanted the promise of a better life, more happiness and more ease in living.
I have virtually rid myself of the automatic judgmental and angry attitude I once had. I’m no longer a slave to automatic thinking and compulsive mental traps engrained by decades of addiction.
Since coming to SMART less than two years ago, my life has changed dramatically for the better because of using these very simple but powerful tools. I am more able to think clearly about problems in everyday life. I understand myself better and I’m free from the judgment of others because I accept myself and let others be who they are. I’ve used the techniques here not only to stay sober and improve my personal life, but also to enjoy the present and prepare for the future with confidence. I have virtually rid myself of the automatic judgmental and angry attitude I once had. I’m no longer a slave to automatic thinking and compulsive mental traps engrained by decades of addiction.
My life has been greatly enriched by this program at a very profound and deep level. I’m fortunate that I had already been sober a long time so that I didn’t have to struggle to listen and learn. Although it probably took me a year to get comfortable enough to start trying the tools, I was learning how to use them along the way by daily chatting, reading and attending at least two online meetings a week. By participating in the truly caring community found here, I feel joy in sharing what I have learned and helping others find a similar personal power.
I applied the tools to issues of everyday living with relative ease and great results; I feel more empowered than ever and it is a program that will continue to help me grow and learn. It is a joyful program that has transformed a life of being merely sober and clean into a full and free life — a life worth living.
