Alby's Story

I dealt with my compulsive alcoholism and active isolation initially in AA (I got three and a half years without a lapse). But went out (moderation) for two years... and after only two months compulsively drinking (inappropriate times for me)... went back to meetings online (still before SMART) and became a volunteer on the other forum (Christian based 12 steps... because Jesus is my Higher Power), I successfully abstained for just over a year and a half.

Twelve steps however, didn't address the fundamental issues that remained after I stopped drinking... and on a Google search I found SMART Recovery via an article at this site on "Low Frustration" tolerance... ding, ding, ding... the bells went off, and I found what I needed to learn and incorporate into my daily living to help me reintegrate back to my family, my church, and my friendships.

SMART Recovery participation has done for me what the 12 steps couldn't do -- to reframe my post alcohol thinking... and my life is all the better for it.

The SMART Recovery tools and articles have helped my mental thought processes immensely. I bought the workbook and the CD and use them to help me process my thoughts and feelings and have incorporated setting mini goals, short term goals... and am still warming up to long term goals (other than abstinence). I no longer act out violently to frustration or anger, I am relearning coping skills and improving my ability to verbally communicate my needs, wants, and expectations... I no longer suffer from bouts of depression, and I have much more peace and calm in my life.

My CBA was on "Self Harming Thoughts", because I found that underneath my desire to drink or smoke, that I use them as maladaptive coping even though I know that they are harmful to me and cause addiction. Though still smoking tobacco (starting and stopping many times since the last relapse after 5 years free and another 9 months free) I am capable of long term sobriety and have completely reintegrated back to the land of the living.

Please Donate Today!I am no longer actively isolating, and I am beginning to enjoy life again with the help of the participants here, who have great insights and who are always ready to read, and post their assessments. This has helped me tremendously. SMART Recovery participation has done for me what the 12 steps couldn't do -- to reframe my post alcohol thinking... and my life is all the better for it.
