The Healthy Lifestyles Guided Self-Change Program, a specialty outpatinet program at Nova Southestern University's (NSU) Psychology Services Center, offers a unique short-term, evidence-based, non 12-step alternative treatment, Guided Self-Change, not available elsewhere in Florida. The Guided Self-Change (GSC) treatment has been accepted for inclusion on the American Psychological Associations (APA) Division 12 (Society of Clinical Psychology) Empirically Supported Treatments (EST) website.
Guided Self-Change, a motivational cognitive-behavioral treatment, was established in 1984 in Canada by Dr.s Linda & Mark Sobell, and brought to Nova Southeastern University in 1996. Both Dr. Linda & Mark Sobell are licensed psychologists in Florida and have their Diplomates in Cognitive and Behavioral Psychology, American Board of Professional Psycholoyg.
Services are offered for people concerned about becoming healthier, losing weight, exercising more, drinking less, developing better relationships, quitting smoking, quitting gambling, stopping drug use, reducing internet use, becoming more goal-directed and improving sleep. This evidence-based, motivational program empowers people to take responsibility for their own change and utilizes personal strenths for settnig and achieving goals. The program has also been evaluated in several clinical studies. Services are available in English & Spanish. A sliding fee scale is available. The number of sessions is variable and determined by individual client needs.
